At St. Michael’s our vision is to create an inclusive and equable curriculum and environment in which all children can thrive.
Our Intent
Our intention is to identify and remove any barriers to learning, as well as any other factors that may affect a child’s ability to thrive. We want every child to feel confident, safe, and able to succeed.
We achieve this through High‑quality adaptive teaching that responds to individual needs, Carefully targeted support to address specific areas of difficulty and Nurturing pastoral care that supports emotional wellbeing.
We work closely with families and a range of professionals to shape bespoke provision that reflects each child’s unique strengths, needs, and aspirations.
Our Implementation
Staff at St Michael’s have high expectations for every pupil, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. Teachers use their knowledge of each child to provide appropriate scaffolds, resources, and strategies that promote success.
Our SEND provision is planned and delivered in response to the four recognised areas of need:
- Communication and Interaction
- Cognition and Learning
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
- Sensory and/or Physical Needs
We use the four‑stage cycle of Assess, Plan, Do, Review to structure support and monitor progress. This process helps us to understand what a child needs, plan appropriate provision, deliver targeted support, and review its effectiveness.
As part of this cycle, teachers create Individual Education Plans (IEPs) which outline specific targets and strategies. These are shared with children and their parents/carers at least three times a year, usually on a termly basis, ensuring families remain fully involved.
Our Impact
Regular discussions take place between teaching teams and the SENCO to review each child’s progress. These conversations help us to identify what is working well and plan any additional support needed to help children continue to thrive.
If a child is no longer making expected progress, despite high‑quality support, the SENCO may request that the Local Authority carries out an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment. This assessment explores a child’s needs in greater depth and considers whether additional specialist provision is required.
Following an assessment, the Local Authority may decide to issue an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC plan).
An EHC plan is a legal document that sets out a child or young person’s Special Educational, Health and Social Care needs, outlines the outcomes the child will be supported to achieve and details the comprehensive provision required to meet their needs. Our staff work closely with families and professionals to ensure that the provision within an EHC plan is delivered effectively, consistently, and with care.
