What is special about Oracy at St Michael’s Primary School?
Oracy is at the heart of learning across our curriculum.
Children are taught to communicate clearly, articulate their ideas and develop confidence through purposeful talk in every subject, helping them become successful learners.
Respect the Speaker is a shared expectation across our school.
Children learn to track the speaker, listen attentively, take turns and understand that every voice deserves to be heard. These consistent routines help create calm, respectful classrooms where everyone can contribute.
Strong speaking and listening skills build strong readers and writers.
Through discussion, questioning and active listening, children develop vocabulary, comprehension and the confidence to express their ideas, providing the foundations for success across the curriculum.
We have high expectations for every child.
By explicitly teaching respectful communication and active listening, we help children become thoughtful listeners, confident speakers and respectful members of our school community who are ready for life beyond St Michael's.
